Dr. Dionysia Avgerinopoulou

 Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou is an influential politician and attorney regarding Environmental Law and Policy. In 2015, she was nominated for the position of the Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) by the Hellenic Government. She is currently the Chair of the Circle of the Mediterranean Parliamentarians of Sustainable Development (COMPSUD), Director of the European Institute of Law, Science & Technology (EILST) and a Member of the Steering Committee of the Global Water Partnership Organization (GWPO).  She has been elected as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament three times. During her tenures, she held the positions of the Chair of the Special Standing Committee on Environmental Protection and the Subcommittee of the Water Resources, as well as the Chair of the Permanent Standing Committee of National Defense and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament. She has also served as Chairperson of the Committee on United Nations Affairs of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Deputy Head of the Environmental Policy Sector of the New Democracy Party.

Dionysia received a first degree in Law (LL.B.) from the Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodestrian University of Athens, Greece  and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. She also holds a Doctorate in Juridical Science (J.S.D.) with specialization in International Environmental Law and International Institutions from the Columbia University School of Law in New York, NY. She  has been a recipient of numerous awards, among others, the “40 Under 40” of the EU, a U.S. Special Congressional Recognition, the “2010 Global Leadership Award for Leadership in Helping Humanity” and the “Goddess Artemis Award.” She speaks Greek, English, French & German.
